We all know kids need plenty of fuel but most of the time it’s tough to figure out what you can pack them for school that’s also healthy. They need plenty of energy but what they pack needs to fit into their lunchbox and actually be eaten if it’s healthy! We’ve all been through that awful experience of finding the mouldy sandwich at the bottom of the bag… gross. What makes it even trickier is having food that doesn’t need to be heated up and stays edible long enough to make it through an Aussie summer. There are many tasty, yet healthy back to school lunch box meals that kids will savour instead of tossing them into the bin.

.Lean Meat Sandwiches on a StickEating sandwiches can be a little more fun if they’re eaten the non-traditional way. Making lean meat sandwiches (e.g. ham, turkey, and chicken) and placing them on small wooden skewers with cheese will let your kids have a bit of fun eating their sandwich. A little like roasting some marshmallows!
2.Heart-Shaped Banana Bread
Why not increase the nutritional value of your traditional sandwich and add a little touch of magic… and banana of course? Let them know the first day back at school isn’t so bad by cutting them into some fun shapes. Let them know you’re thinking of them with a heart-shaped banana bread surprise. If you’re being super creative try and go for a few other creations. Maybe a teenage mutant ninja turtle??
3.Take a Tour of Italy
The Italians definitely cook their food different! Why not give your kids a mini tour of Italy in their lunch box by packing veggie pasta salad with sides of pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, crackers, and some capsicum? Healthy and international!
4.Cracker Feast
Kids loving their crackers or chips! Kids can have the crunchy lunch that they love when crackers are packed with a lean meat and cheddar cheese. Finish with a side of celery and they’ll be crunching their way to the final bell.
5. Mediterranean Madness
The Mediterranean sea is known for its sparkling blue colour but also their delicious food. It’s perfect for an Aussie summer! Think about packing your kids the best of the Mediterranean with some seeded crackers, grapes, capsicum, celery, hummus, tuna, cheese sticks, and oven roasted turkey breast. Super easy to prepare and healthy as well!
6. Fruit Salad
Fruit is natures lollies. However, fruit actually has some nutritional value. There’s plenty of variety with strawberries, blueberries, bananas, grapes, kiwis, pineapple, cantaloupe, apple slices, and anything else that’s in season.
Time often works against us when we’re packing lunches at the start of the year, but don’t let that stop you getting some healthy alternatives to make their day first day back a good one.
