Ways to make your home look bigger

Particularly during the colder months, it can get a little claustrophobic in small homes when it’s too cold and rainy to open the windows and get outdoors. We know the struggle all too well, and it can quickly become depressing if you feel like you’re confined to a small space in your downtime.

If it’s your home’s tiny rooms you’re worried about, no need to deal with it! There are ways to make small spaces appear roomier, here are a few of our favourites:

Bright as light or dark as night

If you’re all about the medium shades, you could be making your rooms appear smaller! Bright white shades or deep dark paints can give a room more depth and make it appear larger than it is.

Scale down

The more stuff you fit into a room, the smaller it’ll seem. Opt for the less ‘cushiony’ furniture and you’ll be surprised how much you can open the room. By keeping furniture sleek and away from the walls – you’ll open the boundaries of the room.

Who’s the fairest of them all?

That’s right, keeping mirrors on the walls will reflect open space back into the room, creating a window-like appearance. They’re also handy for reflecting light, which tricks the eyes into perceiving a more open space.

Match it all!

If you have windows in the room, make sure they match the colour of the walls. This will blend the space and not make it seem enclosed. Alternatively, opt for sheer curtains to always keep the appearance of a window in the room.

Vertical limits

Whether you have wood panelling on the walls or not, drawing the eye to something vertical in the room can give the appearance of a taller space. Tall shelves, bookcases or even a long hanging lightbulb will do the trick.

Simplicity is key

Avoiding knickknacks and overcrowding a room can give the impression that it’s bigger. This goes for spaces on benches and tables and for art or patterns on the walls. By avoiding colours that are overwhelming or busy patterns, and by being intentional with everything that goes into the room, you won’t feel like a rat in a cage when it’s inside time.
