Reality shows make it look so easy. A quick design scribbled out on a napkin over a coffee, and the next minute the builders are in pulling down the walls. It takes a little bit longer in the real world – here’s what you need to know to make that dream reno a reality.

Be organised

The key to a successful renovation is very simple: organisation. Setting out your goals and plans from the outset will help you to understand the scope of the project – and what you will need to take into consideration.

• What’s the budget? This will help inform what you can actually afford to do, rather than what you would like to do
• What planning and permissions will be required?
• Are there any parts you can do yourself to save money?
• Have a central checklist for efficient project management and confidence

Know what’s happening – and when

Larger projects will always be handled first – think roof, windows and structural repairs. Next up are smaller but crucial installs such as air conditioning, heating, plumbing and electricals. Rooms are usually tackled from top to bottom, starting with ceilings and moving on to walls and floors. It’s a sensible way to avoid those paint drips on your new flooring.

Be inspired

Designing and interior planning can start immediately. Collate any ideas and pin them all on a mood board. It’s a good place to come back to when you have a wobble. Changes are OK – but just be aware of the knock-on impact they will have on the whole project. It’s worthwhile checking in with tradies about new ideas, as they can often advise on less obvious pros and cons.

Do your research

Online forums are a great place to get product advice and money-saving tips. Be prepared for the budget to tip over, but stick hard to your check list and you won’t go far wrong.
