It doesn’t matter if you’re a first-time mover or a seasoned pro, moving house is often stressful. But don’t worry, in this blog post we’re sharing 9 tips to make your move as stress-free as possible. Grab your phone, take some notes (unless it’s already in your hand!) and make your next move a breeze.
1. Book your removalist
There are plenty of ways to find removalists nowadays and we recommend looking for one on Airtasker – Hire Skilled People. It’s a great website to find a removalist that won’t break the bank. If your budget is limited, you can also hit up friends or family members who own trailers to help you out, or even rent one yourself.
Trust us, you don’t want to be lugging around heavy furniture and boxes on your own. It’s not only tiring and time consuming, but it also increases the risk of injury.
2. Start the cull
At least 10 days before you move, take the time to go through your belongings and purge anything that you haven’t worn or used for a good 12 months. Not only will this help to pack and move without stress, but it’ll also free up space in your new home.
Donate your culled items to charity or sell them online to make some extra cash. It’s a great opportunity to start afresh in your new home.
3. Get packing!
Once you’ve finished culling, start packing the things you can live without for a few days. Create a moving house checklist and label each box with the room it belongs in. Remember to keep all your important documents together in a safe place.
Be sure to use high quality packing materials like bubble wrap and heavy-duty tape to ensure your belongings are protected and remain intact during the move. Don’t forget to label your boxes accordingly!
Pro packing tip: Use towels as a replacement for bubble wrap. It’ll save you a ton of space and the environment will thank you!
4. Think about insurance
If you haven’t already, consider getting home and contents insurance in case something unexpected happens to your home or your valuables. Home insurance provides protection if your home is damaged or destroyed, and contents insurance covers possessions kept in or around the home. You never know when something might go wrong, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Life and trauma insurance, which is designed to protect you and your lifestyle, is also something to think about.
5. Update your details
Contact all your providers – utilities, phones, internet, insurance, bank accounts etc., and notify them of your new address to guarantee a smooth transition when you settle into your new home. You don’t want to be without power or internet on your first night. What will you do without the internet? Talk?!
6. Moving day items
Make a checklist of all the things you’ll need to have on hand during the day of the move. Pack them together and label the box ‘MOVING DAY’. This should include things like toilet paper, cleaning products, phone chargers, and anything else you’ll need on the big day.
You don’t want to be digging through a pile of boxes looking for your toothbrush on the first night in your new home.
7. Book the cleaners
Don’t forget to clean your new (empty) home before moving day and take the opportunity to get into all those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies! Then, once the move is complete, your old home will need to be cleaned too. After all the hard work of packing and moving, it’ll probably be the last thing you feel like doing, so consider booking a professional cleaning service to take care of it for you (Airtasker can also help with this). You’ll thank yourself later.
8. Bring everyone with you!
Don’t forget the dog, the kids, or your significant other! (Or maybe you want to?) Make sure to include them in the move or arrange for them to be cared for during the transition. Moving is a big change for everyone, so it’s important to make sure your entire crew is on board and comfortable with the process.
9. Pop the champagne!
You’ve earned it! Remember to leave your mortgage broker a review and don’t forget to tag them in your celebratory social media post!
We hope these tips help make your move stress-free. Remember to take things one step at a time and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Good luck and enjoy your new home!
